Celebrating Connections

The Long Island State Veterans Home is delighted with its partnership with ACLD (Adult & Children With Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc.), YAI National Institute for People With Disabilities and Maryhaven Center of Hope. Volunteers from these groups come to the Veterans Home to help out each week. They deliver the Recreation Calendars & Resident Council Meeting Minutes to our residents, keep our Café clean and orderly and do numerous mailings for the facility. To thank the group participants for all their hard work and dedication, the Veterans Home invited them to a Pizza Party on June 19th. This event was well attended by over 40 participants. The Veterans Home is very appreciative of these groups for their continued dedication, enthusiasm and assistance!

Celebrating Our Volunteers

The Long Island State Veterans Home held its 15th Annual Volunteer Recognition Event on June 29, 2007 at Windows on the Lake overlooking Lake Ronkonkoma. This year’s theme was “Volunteers: Our Good Fortune Since 1991”. This event was well attended by about 90 volunteers. Everyone had a good time reconnecting with friends, winning prizes, receiving awards and enjoying a tasty meal. A special addition to this year’s event was celebrating the Home’s 15th anniversary. Special service awards were distributed to volunteers who have been with us for at least 10 years and for 15 years.

10-Year Service Awards: Sal Bertolone, John Bopp, Edward Borowski, Rosemarie Carman, Shirley Carr, Louise & Michael Cupolo, Margaret Dankenbrink, Andy Eichner, Loretta Fafard, Robin Ferencz-Kotfica, Lou Lehe, Ralph Lempin, Mildred May, Ann Melvin, Arnold Michels, Mary Newman, Ralph Pantaleone, Raymond Rosario, Anita Tangredi and Fred Weinstein.

15-Year Service Awards: Jerry Carr, Hugh J.B. Cassidy, Ellen Kalletta, Edward McCarthy, Gloria Violette.

In addition we had two special volunteers receive Volunteer Excellence Awards, Ralph Lempin and Mary Newman. The two award winners have been with the Home for a combined total of 26 years and have contributed 8045 hours. They have always been extremely dedicated, reliable and enthusiastic about helping. Recently they have decided to retire from volunteering to pursue other interests and ventures in their lives. They will be very missed at the Home, and we wish them happiness and fulfillment in all that they pursue.
