Two Volunteers are Honored
The Long Island State Veterans Home recently held our 18th Annual Volunteer Recognition Lunch where we celebrate the dedication and commitment of all our volunteers. Volunteers at this event receive pins and certificates for the hours they have contributed to the home and for their years of service. This year we honored two very special volunteers with special awards. One of these volunteers was Ann Melvin who received the Presidential Service Award, Lifetime Achievement level for contributing more than 4,000 hours to the Home. The other was Lon Werner who has contributed more hours than any volunteer in the history of the Veterans Home, from February 18, 2000 to June 23, 2009 he contributed 6,944 hours.
NATIONAL NURSING HOME WEEK
To improve the golden moment of opportunity; and catch the good that is within our reach, is the great art of life. -- Samuel Johnson. The Golden Years National Nursing Home Week begins on Sunday, May 10 th , and concludes on Saturday, May 16 th . It was established in 1987 by the American Health Care Association to recognize the residents who live in nursing homes, their families and those who provide care. The theme we have chosen this year to celebrate our facility is, “The Golden Years.” This theme appropriately addresses the idea that we all reach for the gold, that we all are bearers of the light. To commemorate this special event, the Therapeutic Recreation Department of the Long Island State Veterans Home is planning a week of activities and all available staff is invited to join in the festivities. The following is a brief narrative of the events, below a more specific outline.

Health Information and Technology (HI&T) Week.
The Long Island State Veterans Home will be providing information and a presentation, a quiz and prizes during the week.
This years topic coincides with the Veterans Home project to select and implement an electronic medical record.
On September 25, Veterans Home employees gave up a day off to help build a home with Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk. The 4 bedroom home in Shirley will be owned by a mom and her 5 children, who now are living with family. If you would like to volunteer or for more information, go to Stony Brook Habitat. This is the seventh year that Veterans Home employees have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. Occupational Therapy Department
LISVH Welcomes Two New OTR’s! 2008 has been a busy year for our growing Occupational Therapy Department. CJ Hessney, Senior OT, Joanne Davis, COTA and Ann Hughes, OT Aide have been joined by two new dynamic staff members, Michelle Barresi and Diane Maresca in March and April. Both Michelle and Diane graduated from Touro College in 1998 with their Masters Degrees in OT and have spent their ten year careers working with Geriatric patients at Parker Jewish Geriatric Center and Carillon SNF. Michelle most recently served as the Senior OT at Carillon and Diane worked there with their Adult Day Care population before arriving here at LISVH. Michelle has become an integral part of the teams on Units 3C, 3D, 2C and 2D while Diane is an important team member for the entire first floor. They both bring the dedication, energy and experience that our residents deserve! You can meet them in the OT department on the first floor. Please stop by to say hello and find out more about what Occupational Therapy is all about!

National Therapeutic Recreation Week July 13-19, 2008
National Therapeutic Recreation Week was established in 1984 by the National Therapeutic Recreation Society and has been celebrated during the second week of July since its inception. The purpose of this special week is to increase awareness of the clinical and life-affirming properties of Therapeutic Recreation. The objective is to provide insight into how a leisure opportunity for individuals with disabilities and illnesses enhances quality of life and well-being.
Though the National Therapeutic Recreation Society establishes a theme for the week, the Therapeutic Recreation Department at the Long Island State Veterans Home has decided to create their own thematic vision. The theme for our facility is: TR Brings the World to L.I.S.V.H. Our goal is to bring the world home! This may seem like an impossible dream, but we can dream the world into being with a little creativity and passion. We are therefore inviting everyone to share the experience, and we thank you for any aid you can provide in helping to make this week a success. With a little imagination and foresight, the world can be at our fingertips. Please extend a helping hand while joining the festivities.
National Volunteer Appreciation Week is April 27 - May 3
The Long Island State Veterans Home always takes this opportunity to show our appreciation to our valued volunteers. We will be holding special activities and contests during the week. Thank you volunteers!!!!!!! You make the Veterans Home a very special place.

Nursing Home Week is May 11 - May 17
It was established in 1987 by the American Health Care Association to recognize the residents who live in nursing homes, their families and those who provide care. The theme this year is “Love is Ageless.” This theme appropriately addresses the idea of love being at the center of action and that it is not limited by age.
To commemorate this special event, the Long Island State Veterans Home is planning a week of activities designed to acknowledge the compassion and dedication that are at the heart of nursing home care.
A Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday, May 11 th , will set in motion the festivities. Monday afternoon the residents will experience photographic makeovers in the MPR. Tuesday will highlight a wandering minstrel on the units. The veterans’ canine friends will visit on Wednesday in the MPR.
This will be followed by an art show in the atrium that will reveal creativity as well as individual style. On this same day, for those adventurous residents, a trip to Belmont Racetrack will favor another animal of choice. The Suffolk County VFW Auxiliary will sponsor Bonus Bingo on Thursday.
The Friday Bingo, sponsored by the Suffolk County American Legion Auxiliary, will be followed by a slide show of our innovative community. Because growth and mobility are thematic of life at the Veterans’ Home, Saturday concludes the week’s events with an antique car show that symbolizes the enduring beauty of age.
Since this is a community event, there will be a little surprise for those who extend an extra helping hand. Thank you for helping to make this week a success. A specific calendar of events will follow.

Frank Gerard Cervo is a member of Boy Scout Troop 301, Saint James, NewYork. In the early part of 2007, Frank decided to construct a fish pond at the LISVH as his Eagle Scout Project. He submitted a plan for the building of the pond to Mr. Fred Sganga and Mr. Jack Dell'Orto of the Veterans Home and to his Eagle Scout Advisor and Troup 301 Scoutmaster. After receiving enthusiastic support for the project, Frank raised funds by organizing two Car Washes and purchased the necessary materials for the pond. With the help of Mr. Dell'Orto, fellow scouts, adult volunteers and Vets Home employees, Frank completed the project this summer. In the fish pond dedication ceremony held in early September, Frank thanked all those who supported and contributed to the project and hoped that the residents, families and staff of the LISVH would enjoy the pond for many years to come.
